How to Maintain Your Wooden Doors

Buying custom wooden gates for your garden can be a great investment. They add a touch of style to your home, are an additional security barrier and can last a lifetime if you take care of them correctly. Here we teach you how to take care of them.
Wooden doors can come in all shapes and sizes and there are also many different types of wood. When choosing your wooden door, you need to properly choose the materials so you know how to properly maintain it.
When you have decided which materials to use, you should familiarize yourself with these maintenance tips. The more you take care of your gate, the longer it will stay in perfect condition and blend in perfectly with your garden.
How to Prevent Rust on Hinges and Latches
You should periodically check all the hinges and latches on your wooden doors. If you let the metal hinges rust, not only will your metal door become unstable, but the screws and nails will begin to loosen and can damage the wood.
Regularly brush off any dust or dirt to keep them clean. You may also need to adjust the hinges from time to time. Always make sure the metal is secured to the wood to prevent it from breaking.
Perform Maintenance and Replace Any Rusted Bolts
If you notice rust, you should replace the bolts and hinges as soon as possible. Rust spreads quickly, especially in a humid environment, however, replacing rusty hinges or latches will keep the wood sharp and strong.
Regular Cleaning
A regular wipe with a damp cloth will keep dirt and grime off your door, keeping it looking its best. This will also stop any erosion of the wood and prevent pests and mold, so it will look newer longer.
Primer and Oil Application
Primers and oils prevent weather damage, prevent pests from entering the wood, and also ensure it looks great. Before applying a dye, it is advisable to test it first to make sure you are happy with the color. Additionally, you should buy a good quality brush to prevent the bristles from falling out while painting. You can also use a spray dye, but make sure you are in an area where the dye won’t affect other features.
Be sure to cover both sides of the door with stain or oil without waiting for one side to dry first. If one side dries out (especially if you are using softwood), the door may warp as it absorbs the liquid, so both sides should be completed simultaneously to prevent damage.
